Russian Ninja Pirate here!

This week, JVCA is proud to present:

-AKAGI

One stormy night, Nangou is playing a game of Mahjong with the local yakuza. Soon, he finds himself on a losing streak. If Nangou loses, he will have to pay with his life. Suddenly, a young teenaged boy, Akagi Shigeru, barges in, drenched from the rain. After watching a couple of games, he offers to replace the struggling Nangou. At that moment, a new legend was born.

CAN YOU HANDLE THE MANLY EPIC NOSES? DIDN'T FUCKING THINK SO

In a nutshell, this show is about the craziest, most calculating criminal mastermind to ever enter the world of professional gambling who keep pulling the riskiest, most batshit insane tricks and mindgames ever to completely decimate his opponents. And he succeeds spectacularly, leaving his opponents’ minds and egos in utter ruins. This is JUST AS PLANNED at its absolute pinnacle.

The best part about the show is that it’s so fucking manly and hardcore that you don’t even really need to understand how to play mahjong in order to enjoy it.

-KAIJI

Itou Kaiji is a bum who steals car emblems and slashes tires on what seems to be a regular basis. This routine changes one day when he is paid a visit by a man in a trench-coat. Once the two get talking, it seems that the visitor (Calling himself Endou) is a debt collector. The reason for his visit is an unpaid loan which kaiji had previously co-signed for a work-mate (Furuhata Takeshi). The original loan was 30000 yen and once Takeshi had disappeared, the loan then fell on Kaiji. Kaiji is then told of a way to clear the interest compounded debt (which stood at 3,850,000 yen), which involved getting on a boat with others in his position. Once on the boat the debtors would then have to gamble with loaned money, which would end with a few winning, and others getting into deeper debt and having to work to pay of their debts. After some coercing kaiji accepts a position on the boat, in order to clear himself and make a bit of money as well…

As you can plainly see from the art style, Kaiji is a brainchild of Nobuyuki Fukumoto, the mad genius behind Akagi. Unlike the ridiculous badass Akagi, the main character in Kaiji (named, well, Kaiji) is kind of a miserable wimp (or at least he starts off this way) with occasional moments of insane brilliance. Despite that, you can’t help but root for the guy as he desperately claws his way out of situations with the most hopeless odds imaginable, and that’s probably one of the show’s greatest strengths.

I will say this – although I somehow never got around to finishing Akagi, after watching the first few episodes of Kaiji, I was completely fucking hooked. That night, I went back home, downloaded the entire show and blew through all 26 episodes of it that very night. And every episode, every single one, ended on such a brickshittingly intense cliffhanger that I started skipping openings and endings.

Yeah, I know lots of you do that, but as those of you who know me can tell you, I never skip OPs and EDs. Unless they’re total fucking shit.

So that should tell you something right there. Have fun with this one, guys. It’s fantastic. :3

In other news, starting this meeting, we’ll be bringing back a little tradition we tried implementing a couple of years ago. In addition to the thematic weekly showings, we’ll be following a couple of shows throughout the semester by watching an episode of each every meeting after the main showing. Here are the shows:

-INU X BOKU SS

Protected by the highest security, the Maison de Ayakashi is rumored to be haunted, where only eccentrics could live. In reality, it is a place for humans with non-human ancestors to live. The socially-inept Ririchiyo has come here to improve herself. She meets secret service bodyguard Soushi, who is assigned to protect residents. He has a request of her: “Please make me your dog.”

Honestly, looking at this image kinda feels like Chris Hansen will bust down my door any moment...

-DANSHI KOUKOUSEI NO NICHIJOU

A glimpse into the lives of Tadakuni, Yoshitake, and Hidenori, three friends attending a boys-only high school.

The title of the show translates to “The Daily Lives of High School Boys”. And looking at the promotional image, I gotta say that’s probably one of the most all-encompassingly descriptive titles I’ve seen. Should be a pretty nice little slice-of-life.

Have fun tonight, guys!

Ninja pirate over and out.

Welcome back clubbies! There’s a lot of content coming your way so let me get to the point. If you haven’t guessed from the title yet, we will be doing two things for our first meeting of the semester: (1) Introduce you to the fresh batch of series this Winter season and (2) Expand your horizon to the world of Visual Novels through Katawa Shoujo.

As for the Winter Series. Now there’s a crapload of shows out there and there’s no way we can fit all in one session. That said, I will be omitting sequels with an exception or two.

Aquarion Evol

Thoughts

I’ll tell you right off the bat that this is a sequel set 12,000 years after the events in Sousei No Aquarion. The premise consists of highly intelligent, technology capable, and immortal <del>aliens</del> beings known as Shadow Angels who apparently who had the human beings at their mercy. One day, one of these beings fell in love with a human. Somehow a mecha was employed to fend off the Shadow Angels.

Those of you who watched and enjoyed Sousei No Aquarion will not be disappointed since elements of the series remain true to its predecessor. To those who haven’t, well, you’re in for a lot of WTFs. To that end I’ll say, “WELCOME TO AQUARION”.

Rinne no Lagrange

Thoughts

Probably my favorite this season. Premise includes GIANT ROBOTS, the girls who can pilot them..and once again, ALIENS. The themes are anything but new but the reason why this series won me over is the protagonist (middle girl). When it comes to female mech pilots archetypes, hers is something new and refreshing. Can’t quite find the word for it. There’s also the fact that she’s a BRO?

Amagami SS+

Thoughts

Simply put, it’s a sequel to Amagami SS. Even more specific, it’s currently a sequel to Ayatsuji Tsukasa’s arc (6th girl, Student Council President, manipulative, cunning, etc). Now, I know not if the entire series will follow an omnibus format like its prequel which whether or not the series will revolve around Ayatsuji and her only will be up for debate.

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou

Thoughts

The translation of the series’ name in English is literally ‘The Daily Lives of High School Boys.’ It’s a gag series, a very notable one at that. That’s all there is to it.

Another

Thoughts

The first thing I can think of the moment I caught wind of Another getting animated was the fact that there’s going to be one more series to choose from when it comes to the horror. See, we don’t have much in the genre if you ask me so I always welcome series like this without second thought. As far as reactions are concerned, the series starts off creepy though not necessarily scary (yet). I’m banking on a hunch that the intensity will pick up by fifth episode or so.

Well I guess that’s everything worth mentioning (for me at least) though the watch list doesn’t stop there. There are a couple other shows that I’ve picked up but can at best be summarized by a couple of phrases.

Inu X Boku SS

Enchanted Bodyguards And One of Them is Gily Eye Candy

Mouretsu Pirates

Space Pirates

Senhime Zesshou Symphogear

Vocaloid + Battles = LOLWUT

Papa No Iu Koto O Kikinasai

LOLIS please, come to Daddy

Ano Natsu De Matteru

DAT SUMMER SOMETHING HAPPENED

Nisemonogatari

SMUT GATARI

Kill Me Baby

I don’t even…

First Ever Visual Novel Night

To add something to seemingly mundane meetings of just watching, I would like to experiment on adding playing Visual Novels on the side..and I must say, the timing couldn’t be better with the recent completion of a highly anticipated visual novel that started off as a doujin sketch, somehow ended up in 4chan, and finally becoming a full-fledged developmental project assembled from various internet communities. Presenting, Katawa Shoujo.

Seeing that this is the first time this has happened, playthrough can go anywhere. I can only imagine that routes will be decided by consensus among the audience. Ah well, we’ll see how this goes.

Hi guys, “John here”. Hope everybody has had a wonderful break so far.

As for the first post of the year, I would like to introduce you to a nifty website called MyAnimeList, which for the most part is, a site that maintains a list of anime (and manga) you’ve seen/read, plan to see/read, drop, put on hold, etc.

Probably not especially useful for the average person, but seeing as we’re THE JAPANESE VISUAL CULTURE ASSOCIATION who, as a whole, watch anime/read manga by the dozens, it’s only imperative.

That said, I’ve taken the liberty of creating us an account over there. This way, the executive board can keep track of series we’ve shown you.

Of course, I haven’t completely added what series have been shown in the past. Actually, that’s kind of impossible since I’ve only been on the executive board for less than a year. In any case, I might have to consult our very own index here (that would be your Webmaster ‘Raptor’ ).

So if you have not created one yet, then by all means do! I would like to delve into series you’ve watched or read!

FAQ: But isn’t updating MyAnimeList on a regular basis a hassle?

Why yes it is…until you use a nifty tool called MyAnimeList Updater (MALu)!

FAQ: How does said MALu work?

1. Upon obtaining, configure it for the first time (MAL username/pw, download folders, choice of media player, etc)
2. Whenever you want to update, open up MALu, open an episode of your selection

And that’s it! It will update your MAL account on your behalf!

FAQ: Where can I learn about/get MALu?

Well, that’s it. With Christmas season just around the corner, it’s time for the last meeting of the semester. Unsurprisingly, Japanese animation isn’t really that heavy on Christmas-themed titles, but after scraping the bottom of the barrel, we actually did manage to come up with a handful of titles and assorted episodes. :3

This week, JCA is proud to present:

-TOKYO GODFATHERS

On a Christmas Eve, three Tokyo homeless — mid-aged alcoholic man Gin, high school runaway girl Miyuki, and former drag queen Hana — were searching dumpsters and trash bags for possible Christmas gifts for themselves, when cries from a baby drew their attention. Believing this was a gift from God, Hana, who couldn’t have a baby of “her” own, vowed to take care of the abandoned baby girl and together they began searching for baby’s mother.

I actually remember watching this six years ago, when I first joined the club. I remember it like was yesterday… yesterday… yesterday…

Ahhh, that's more like it. You durn kids and your EcchhDees these days... Now GIT!

If memory serves, it’s a truly wonderful movie.

…And now I’m getting slightly depressed thinking about about all the great movies Kon Satoshi (who directed Tokyo Godfathers, in case his trademark animation style didn’t give it away already) would’ve created if he hasn’t succumbed to pancreatic cancer last year…

NEVAR FORGET ;_;

Take a minute readjusting your neck after that mood whiplash.

It’s OK; I’ll wait.

And now that that’s done, here’s something completely different:

-ITSUDATTE MY SANTA!

An unlucky boy named Santa was born on Christmas Eve whose parents don’t even care about meets a santa- in- training girl named Mai. She is determined to wish him the best Christmas he will ever have and its gets even better when they fall in love with each other.

Mai, a Santa in training, appears in front of an Unlucky boy named Santa, on Christmas Eve, promising him, she will make him happy for one night.

Oh lawd, this. This is also a title I remember from <del>back in the fucking Cretaceous period</del> six years ago.

And if memory serves, shitsux. It’s everything that annoyed you about Love Hina – Ken Akamatsu’s annoying slapstick and blatant, pandering fanservice at its worst – distilled into two 30-minute OVAs. But as groan-inspiring as I remember it to be, it should also be entertaining enough for us to riff on, so go nuts.

Hope to see you there! You never know – we might decide to throw some other random stuff at you. :3

Ninja pirate over and out.

Boy, have we got something awesome in store for you guys this week. Until Johann told me about it yesterday, I never even heard of this movie. And now, after doing a little bit of research, I’m now pumped as fuck. :3

This week, JVCA is proud to present:

-REDLINE

Following his dream, “Sweet” JP becomes a racer and gains a large following because of his retro-style sense of fashion and his frequent and spectacular crashes toward the ends of his races. He gets by with money the mob pays him for losing, although he is out on bail for something possibly related to match-fixing. During a qualification race called the Yellowline, JP’s engine explodes. On the verge of giving up, he learns that, by popular vote, he has qualified for the prestigious no-rules race called Redline after two other drivers dropped out. The reason behind this is that the government of Roboworld, the military planet with many people who are cyborgs, the race is to take place on, is opposed to the race and has threatened anyone participating with death to keep their military secrets safe. JP participates in Redline in spite of the danger.

So what I’m getting from that synopsis up there is that it’s basically the anime version of motherfucking ROCK’ N’ ROLL RACING, one of the most dickpunchingly metal games in existence.

Hey Blizzard,WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY SEQUELS?

There isn’t much else I can really tell you to get you even more pumped for this. So here’s some DYNAMIC ACTION:

Vroom vroom, motherfuckers!

See you all there!

AND DON’T FORGET TO BUCKLE UP, BECAUSE WE’RE ABOUT TO BLAST OFF ALL THE WAY TO THE DANGER ZONE

or some shit

Ninja pirate out.

Brace yourselves for the upcoming assault of PINK.

This week, JVCA is proud to present:

-SAILOR MOON STARS

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars is split into two arcs; the first arc deals with an enemy they thought was dead: Nehelenia, who comes back with one intention—to destroy everything that Sailor Moon loves. After they defeat Nehelenia, a new threat comes from beyond the solar system, along with a new senshi, the Sailor Starlights. But determining whether they are friend or foe is harder than it looks. And on top of that, Mamoru has gone overseas to study and Seiya of the idol group the Three Lights is interested in Usagi.

Better known as “that one season that didn’t get an English dub”. Whether or not it’s the season where Tsukino screws the rules because she has green hair remains to be seen.

-TOKYO MEW MEW

On her first date with the cutest boy in school, Ichigo is zapped by a mysterious ray that scrambles her DNA with that of the endangered Iriomote wildcat. The next day, Ichigo discovers that she has developed the agility (and occasionally the ears and tail) of a cat, as well as the power to transform into a pink-haired superheroine, Mew Ichigo. She and four other girls, each endowed with the genes of a different “Red Data” animal, have been selected for the top-secret Mew Project, which aims to protect the Earth from an alien menace known as Deep Blue.

Okay,so what I’m getting so far based on that description is that this show is basically a shoujo take on Captain Planet. Except EVERYONE has the fucking power of Heart. Also aliens.

Kinda like that, except with more cat ears.

-CARD CAPTOR SAKURA

Sakura Kinomoto was an ordinary 4th grader until the day she opened a strange book and let dozens of powerful magic cards loose on the world. Keroberos, the Guardian of the Clow Cards, informs Sakura that it is now her responsibility to find and capture the freed cards. However, much to the reluctant Sakura’s dismay, things aren’t going to be easy for her; simply saying magic words and waving her wand around isn’t good enough. Each card is a living, thinking, extremely powerful being. She’ll have to learn to cope with her new responsibilities, as well as ordinary troubles involving love, school, family, and friends. With the support of her friend Tomoyo and a young boy with powers of his own, she must learn how to use her newly awakened magical abilities to collect each card and prevent the disaster that will befall the world if she doesn’t.

One of the more famous of CLAMP’s creations. The only two things I know about it is that it’s supposedly pretty damn good and that its original American localization, Cardcaptors, is a spectacular fucking hackjob that gives 4Kids’ One Piece dub a run for its money.

-MERMAID MELODY PICHI PICHI PITCH

As the mermaid princess of the North Pacific (one of the seven mermaid kingdoms), Luchia entrusts a magical pearl to a boy who falls overboard a ship one night. Luchia must travel to the human world to reclaim her pearl and protect the mermaid kingdoms. Using the power of music Luchia is able to protect herself and the mermaid kingdoms from a growing evil force.

Mermaids with magical voices, you say..?

Oh San-chan, I'd love to go fishing with you, if you know what I mean. :3

Have fun with this one, guys.

Russian Ninja Pirate over and out.

Goddamn, I need some sleep… z_z

Now, before I say anything else, one thing to keep in mind here is that I never really watched Digimon, because back in SOVIET RUSSIA, all we ever had when I was growing up was Pokemon. I have never watched any of these shows either ,so I claim no responsibility if the show tuns out to have nothing to do with my crazed ramblings that were based off of a cursory glance at the corresponding Wikipedia entry. :3

Katie, our club’s resident Digimon expert, tells me that the following shows basically each represent a completely different continuity. We’ll be watching them in chronological order.

With that said, this week, JVCA is proud to present:

-DIGIMON ADVENTURE

Seven kids are transported to the Digital World, a strange place where digital creatures called “Digimon” reside. A group of Digimon soon befriend them and keep the kids out of harm’s way. The children then become the Digidestined, or Chosen Children, which protect the Digital World from evil Digimon like Devilmon and Myotismon.

The original gangsters.

It’s fucking Digimon. Not much I can really say in addition to that synopsis up there.

-DIGIMON TAMERS

Takato Matsuda, Ruki Matsuno, and Lee Jenrya are children who have, by fate, recieved real Digimon, unlike the imaginary ones in the card game they play. Each of the children, or “Digimon Tamers”, have their different views on how Digimon should be treated. But when other Digimon begin to appear around Japan, they must put aside their differences to fend off the digital intruders; even though Yamaki, who is the head of a secret organization called Hypnos is trying to eliminate all of the Digimon himself.

Now, based on my research, this show is apparently quite unusual in a number of ways. The first one being the fact that it actually takes place in an alternate universe, on a world much like Earth where Digimon is just a franchise comprised of videogames, CHILDREN’S CARD GAMES and animated shows. Or at least it appears to be that way until the three main characters meet actual, real-life Digimon and find out that there are other “bio-emerging” Digimon who cross the barrier between the information network, synthesizing proteins and becoming real.

If that sounds like some potentially heavy shit for a children’s show, well, that’s because it is. Tamers is apparently significantly darker than its predecessors and deals with some surprisingly mature subject matter. That alone makes this show worth watching in my book.

Speaking of that, I do believe there was a point where a more mature and dark take on the Pokemon franchise was actually in the works, until it got canned for being “too dark”.

A GRIMDARK version of Pokemon? How fucking AWESOME would that be!?

I’d watch the FUCK out of that.

That and the PORYGON SKYNET,FROM THE MIND OF ROB LIEFELD.

In the meantime,we have the ShinMegaTen games. I mean,gameplay-wise,they are pretty much Emo Pokeymans…

...If Pokeymans allowed you to summon fallen angels and THE FUCKING DEVIL.

Okay, next show, before this post gets completely derailed. @_@

-DIGIMON FRONTIER

Five children receive strange messages on their cell phones that lead them to a train that takes them to the “Digital World”; a strange world filled with bizarre creatures called “Digimon”. These children have been sent there to stop an evil Digimon named Cherubimon from completely annihilating the planet of all its inhabitants. In order to accomplish this, the 5 children must locate their “spirits”, which will evolve them into the Legendary Warrior Digimon.

I love the picture above because it seems like they actually took the “Frontier” part to heart and went with the whole Wild West theme. I have no idea if the show is actually like that, but for now, this image makes me want to put on my duster, grab my trusty Colt and head out into the wilderness to where those tracks might lead me, with THIS blasting in my mind’s ear. :3

IT'S ADVENTURE TIME!

-DIGIMON SAVERS

Masaru, is a second year Junior High student, and is undefeated in battle, He meets the Digital Monster Agumon, who has escaped from DATS, a secret government organization. Despite terrible first impressions, the two become best friends by talking with their “fists”. With others, Masaru and Agumon work to investigate various incidents involving the Digital World and Digital Monsters, to try and get to the bottom of things.

I finally found a decent-sized picture for this post and, goddammit,I am gonna use it!

Apparently, the main characters in this show are basically a police force. So what I’m getting is that it’s a buddy-cop anime show with pet dinosaurs.

...I'm too old for this shit...

Also, did I just hear “talking with their fists…”?

LOOK,THE EAST IS BURNING RED!

ANSWER ME, JCA!!!

NEXT SHOW

-DIGIMON XROS WARS

Taiki Kudō, an upbeat seventh-grade boy who always helps people in need, encounters a Digimon named Shoutmon, who brings him and his friends to the Digital World. With his friends Akari Hinomoto and Zenjirō Tsurugi, they form Team Xros Heart to compete against rival teams battling for supremacy, with their ultimate goal of taking down the evil Bagura Empire, who plans to conquer the Digital World.

Katie tells me that this show is apparently Digimon + Giant Transforming Robots.

Seriously, it should be impossible to fuck up Giant Transforming Robots.

Unless your name is Michael Bay.

But you see, even before I learned what the show is about, I’d have still decided to watch it just because of the FUCK-OFF GIANT ARMORED SATANSAURUS in the background. Seriously, that thing is so badass-looking. Reminds me of the GIANT ROBOTIC T.REX that the entire first season of Zoids was building up towards.

Phew…

Well, then, see y’all there!

GO GET YOUR FRIENDS,MOTHERFUCKERS!

Oh wait, wrong show. :3

Over and out.

It feels like it’s been ages since we had a good old-fashioned shounen night. There’s just something about seeing a ninja kid beating the shit out of a demon lord in an elaborate superpowers-driven fight scene interspersed with manly posing, jump cutting, dramatic shouting and 10 minute-long flashbacks in the middle of the fight that brings me a peace of mind. :3

So for all of you actionholics who’ve been craving for a healthy dose of power levels,MAMORU,spirit energy,CHIKARA,dark tournaments, heart of the cards,hot-blooded yelling, communicating with your fists and katanas that can cut through everything, this is the night for you.

Well, okay, strictly speaking, the word shounen literally means “boy”,referring more to the 6-16 target demographic, but it has since been pretty much universally understood to be the name of a specific genre, the “group of plucky teenagers beating the shit out of evil and gaining crazy levelups” one that all of us grew up on. [/pointlesstrivia]

That said, this week,<del>JCA</del>JVCA is proud to present:

-NEEDLESS

In the near future, mankind has suffered from a Third World War, leaving extreme damage all over and forced mankind to become even more distinct from their species. The world was at chaos and from this chaos comes a new species: “Needless”. The Needless are humans who have contracted a “disease” as humans may call them, and allow them to wield extraordinary powers far superior to any mankind. Their abilities include Telekinesis, elemental powers, gravity control, adaptation, radioactive release and all manners of scientific impossibility.

Oh god,this show.

If the premise above sounds impossibly fucking generic, that’s because it is.

From the first five episodes or so,it’s apparent that there is not a single goddamn original thought to be found in this whole show. The character archetypes used are the most generic cardboard cutouts you can possibly think of,played off in the most facepalmingly irritating manner possible. The humor consists of the most bottom-of-the-barrel,lowest common denominator slapstick and tit jokes. The character design manages to be both hideously garish and outrageously boring at the same time. The villains are stock. Every plot twist can be predicted from a mile away. Even the superpowers are pretty much nothing you haven’t seen a million times already in much better shows.

So why is this show kick so much ass, then?

Because it’s so ridiculously loud, stupid and over-the-top that it’s totally fucking awesome. For all intents and purposes,it’s basically a shounen parody. If you go in with that mindset, you’re guaranteed to have a blast.

Oh,and it’s probably one of the most riffable shows in my experience,so go nuts. :3

-SENGOKU BASARA

In the bloody Warring States period of feudal Japan, many generals fought in an endless struggle for power, but one man proved to be too big a threat – The dark lord Oda Nobunaga. Sanada Yukimura and Date Masamune, two young warriors from different regions who become heated rivals, begin to form an unlikely alliance with the rest of the generals to take down the Devil King.

Based on a series of videogames in the vein of Dynasty Warriors, this show features a stunningly historically accurate account of the Sengoku era of Japanese history. I want you to keep one thing in mind while watching this show:

THIS IS WHAT ANCIENT JAPAN WAS ACTUALLY LIKE

Also, this show has quite possibly the greatest amount of FUCK YEAH!1! moments per minute of running time in recent memory.

-DOGS (OVA)

Based off of the Japanese manga series by Shirow Miwa, Dogs is set in a world where violence, crime, genetic manipulation and other cruel scientific experiments have become common. The story focuses on four main characters who, through a series of coincidences, meet as they search for answers to their individual past.

To be honest,I know next to nothing about this show, except for the fact that it’s supposed to be really, really fucking good. Well, that and the fact that in terms of the level of violence and the overall tone, this show is supposedly more of a seinen than a shounen. I’m expecting something of the Black Lagoon caliber. :3

Hmmm, this post seems awfully short and to-the-point this week. It feels like I’m forgetting something…

Shouldn’t there be a whole lot more… nonsensical rambling somewhere around here..?

I dunno,maybe that’s just me.

Russian Ninja Pirate,over and out.

Hello members. This is your president John Titor here (obviously) with an important announcement. From this day forward, we shall be referred to as the…

Japanese Visual Culture Association

No, this isn’t your arbitrary name change (well actually it was when the idea was first conceived) nor is this unofficial. The University actually recognized JVCA as of last Tuesday of this week with the submission and approval of our revised constitution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wait…why?!

See , even before I took this executive position I’ve always felt that something about the name of the club how it’s pretty inaccurate in describing what we do/will do. This became even more apparent when I became your President as early the recent Student Involvement Fair that took place last September. I mean when we used declare that we’re the Japanese Cultural Association, most of the expectations were on the Japanese Cultural part of the title. Sure, anime and relevant subcultures can be easily classified as such, but they are by no means the sole item.

Getting to the point, having a “[traditional] Japanese Cultural” facade on the name of our club which, as of its most recent history, does nothing but ‘watch stuff” is a bit troubling. For one thing, as a “cultural club (we never were)”, we’re expected to get involved with activities that directly promote traditional Japanese culture. I get some emails and invitations requesting a showcase of the cultural aspect of our club for Rutgers Student Organization events. And we’re going to accomplish that how…by showing them High School of the Dead?

Things we observe during club meetings: DAT ASS...it's strictly cultural!

I mean we can do strictly cultural activities but that would be just us pretending something we’re not

I can the same during the Involvement Fair not so long ago. We basically greet prospective members with a big sign saying we’re Japanese Cultural Association followed by a tri-fold board with butt-loads of anime. Then we’re asked…”so what exactly does this club do again?”

Bottom line, we look bad and worse for each instance I decline such invitations/request for participation.

Big deal. So what?

With the change of name (as well as change in constitution), we get a better definition to what we want to accomplish in this club. Through this, we can accommodate the recent addition of activities to our weekly routine (most notably the panels and the art division).

All of this leads to the ultimate purpose of obtaining more leverage when it comes to funding. Simply put, the more items we have under our belts, the easier it will be to get funding for stuff we couldn’t access from our previous constitution/name.

Take going to conventions for example. Before with a name like JCA, people would need to think twice (only because conventions aren’t strictly/directly relevant to traditional Japanese Culture). Now add “visual” into the equation, and you drastically increase your likelihood of getting funded.

Why JvCA out of all things?
